David Lawrence


David is a director, musician and actor best known for his work with The Bacchanals, the multi-
award-winning Wellington-based theatre company he founded in 2000. As well as staging plays by
Aristophanes, Euripides, Ibsen, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, Webster, Sarah Kane, Terry Johnson,
Polly Teale, Antony Sher and Jessica Swale, his work has included musicals, opera and the premieres
of many new NZ works. He won the Chapman Tripp Theatre Award for Director of the Year in 2005
and was a member of the 2013 International Actors’ Fellowship at Shakespeare’s Globe. David is a
Hunter Fellow of Victoria University, and his association with Summer Shakespeare dates back to
1993. He joined the Trust in 2008, was co-chair from 2012-2016, and is the author of Wellington
Summer Shakespeare 1983-2017. He is currently Head of Research, Programme Manager and Staff
Director at Pop-up Globe.
